Overrated to MVP: Josh Allen’s 2024 Season

Josh Allen capped off his historic 2024 campaign with the first MVP award of his career after edging out Lamar Jackson by 21 points in one of the most closely contested MVP races in NFL history. Allen is the third player to win the award as a member of the Buffalo Bills, the first at the quarterback position. Thurman Thomas in 1991 and O.J. Simpson in 1973 are the other recipients. This was the fourth time Allen was a finalist for the award after finishing 2nd in 2020, 3rd in 2022, and 5th in 2023. He secured 27 first-place votes, 22 second-place votes, and one third-place vote to secure a big payday, with the MVP win triggering a $1.5 million bonus.

Consolation Prize

Josh Allen and all Bills fans would love to be getting ready for the Super Bowl this weekend and a chance at the Lombardi Trophy. Unfortunately, we have to wait another year for that opportunity. This was a nice consolation after a fantastic season and my favorite as a fan since the 2020 season. Allen looked like he was enjoying the game and having fun again, and they looked and sounded like a team more than they had in the past few seasons. There will be a lot of talk over the results and voting in the coming days. Who cares. Josh Allen is the 2024 MVP. It doesn’t need to be debated or defended because that’s a fact. I am happy that he received the recognition he has earned and deserved with his play since his 2020 breakthrough season. Quite a turn of events after being voted the most overrated quarterback in an ESPN poll before the season.

On top of the MVP award, Allen received the FedEx Air & Ground Player of the Year Award with Ja'Marr Chase. This was Allen’s first time winning the award, and the first year wide receivers and tight ends were eligible. Allen also won the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. Another about-face after Allen was voted the “Biggest Trash-talking QB” in the same ESPN poll with 25% of the votes.

Re-Writing the Record Books

As you can see it was a historic season for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills with what they were able to accomplish. The team took a huge step forward in what was supposed to be a “rebuild” year. With almost all of their starters under contract heading into 2025, there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic if you’re a fan. Go Bills!
